Kindergarten & Grade 1 Program
The kindergarten & grade 1 program provides opportunities for more formalized instruction of 4 –
6+-year-old children all within the free-play framework. The focus of the language curriculum is on early
reading skills using a combination of phonetics and whole language approach. The math curriculum stresses
beginning math skills (addition, subtraction, sets, shapes, classification, etc.) starting with a concrete
approach to the understanding of number and moving to an abstract use of numerals representing that skill.
Science concepts are explored by participation in practical experiments and observations of process and
outcome. There are a variety of socio-cultural activities representing the nationalities participating in
the program. The staff encourages socialization, discovery, and investigation. Interested children can
participate in the Sri Lanka Fun Club where Sinhala letters, words, songs, and games are introduced. The
children make smooth transitions to a variety of international, private and local schools.
